Build Custome SUSE Versions from SUSE Studio
SUSE Linux has introduced SUSE Studio, a web-based tool for creating custom SUSE Linux operating systems and applications based on SUSE Linux.
When I first saw SUSE Studio, I thought it would be much like Red Hat’s RHN. Looking more closely, I found that it primarily targets the appliance market.
I think SUSE Studio is better suited to ISVs, or Independent Software Vendors, because it helps create a system compatible with their software, or an entire appliance that greatly reduces installation complexity. One example on the SUSE Studio website was a WordPress appliance. It is also useful within organizations: installation options include “JeOS” (just enough operating system), portable Linux USB, and custom package selection.
Available output formats include Live CD/DVD, VMware Image, hard disk/USB image, and Xen.
An interesting possibility is applying SUSE Studio to cloud computing technology.
