Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 released
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6, or RHEL 6, has officially launched. It combines code from Fedora 12 and 13, with kernel version 2.6.32 at its core. This version supports up to 4,096 processor cores, up to 64TB of RAM, and XFS file systems up to 100TB. Support for Oracle’s ZFS file system still awaits confirmation, as no details have been provided.
Virtualization continues to use KVM as its core, and also supports Xen from Red Hat Enterprise version 5. An interesting feature is Single Root I/O Virtualization (SRIOV) support for network cards with SRIOV capability. This improves data transfer to VMs in KVM environments by using DMA instead of interrupts, and reduces CPU use compared with conventional systems. Red Hat claims VMs on RHEL 6 deliver 85–95% of physical-machine performance.
