Virtualization

Install fully virtualized Windows 2003 as a guest O/S on Xen.

Installing Windows on Xen under Linux is more involved than with other virtualization systems, because you must check whether the CPU supports operating systems other than Linux through full virtualization. Check with:

#cat /proc/cpuinfo

Intel CPUs must show vmx, and AMD CPUs must show svm. If neither is present, you cannot install operating systems other than Linux.

Once you have confirmed that the machine has vmx or svm, install the virtualization packages. For Red Hat, CentOS, or Fedora, use:

#yum groupinstall Virtualization

Then reboot into kernel-xen so the system supports virtualization.

Next, insert the Windows 2003 disc and run:

#virt-manager

This opens a GUI similar to VMware’s guest OS creation interface. Follow its steps.

<tt class="command">#vi /etc/xen/<guest-name></tt>

is the name you assigned to the guest OS.

Then find the line containing “disk =” and replace it with the text below:

disk = ['file:/var/lib/xen/images/win2003,hda,w',
'file:/var/lib/xen/images/window2003.iso,hdb:cdrom,r' ]
จากนั้นทำการ start guest os โดยใช้คำสั่ง
#virsh start <guest-name>
ก็จะเข้าสู่การ Install windows 2003 ตามปกติ
<strong>Note:</strong>
  1. A fully virtualized guest OS cannot use Plug-n-Play devices such as USB drives or USB CD-ROMs.
  2. To change the memory allocated to a guest OS, shut it down first, then change the memory setting.
  3. With an AMD CPU, installation of Windows Server 2003 64-bit may hang at “Setup is starting Windows”.
