ตอนนี้ Red Hat ได้เปลี่ยน policy เกี่ยวกับข้อมูลการ patch kernel ของ RHEL ซึ่งทาง Red Hat จะทำการ patch kernel ให้เรียบร้อยก่อนแล้วปล่อย kernel source code ออกมาเป็น 1 tarball file วิธีการนี้จะไม่กระทบต่อผู้ใช้งานทั่วไป แต่จะกระทบโดยตรงต่อผู้ที่ได้นำเอา RHEL ไป rebrand โดยจะทำให้ไม่สามารถทราบได้แน่ชัดว่า Red Hat ได้เปลี่ยนแปลงอะไรบ้างและจะยากต่อการ optimize kernel
Red Hat ได้แก้ไข policy แบบนี้จะกระทบต่อ GNU Public License หรือไม่? คำตอบคือ ไม่กระทบต่อ GNU Public License ซึ่งทาง Red Hat เองมีสิทธิโดยชอบที่จะทำการ pre-bundle patch ก่อนนำไปแจกจ่าย

“When we released RHEL 6 approximately four months ago, we changed the release of the kernel package to have all our patches pre-applied. Why did we make this change? To speak bluntly, the competitive landscape has changed. Our competitors in the Enterprise Linux market have changed their commercial approach from building and competing on their own customized Linux distributions, to one where they directly approach our customers offering to support RHEL,” Stevens wrote.
“Frankly, our response is to compete. Essential knowledge that our customers have relied on to support their RHEL environments will increasingly only be available under subscription. The itemization of kernel patches that correlate with articles in our knowledge base is no longer available to our competitors, but rather only to our customers who have recognized the value of RHEL and have thus indirectly funded Red Hat’s contributions to open source that will advance their business now and in the future,” Stevens continued.
คงก็ต้องมาลุ้นกันต่อไปว่า CentOS จะสามารถออก CentOS 6 ได้หรือไม่ แต่ในความเห็นส่วนตัว คิดว่า CentOS สามารถออก CentOS 6 ได้แต่ไม่แน่ใจว่าจะต้องใช้เวลาอีกนานไหม แต่ถ้าใครรอไม่ไหวอยากจะใช้ RHEL 6 clone ก็สามารถไปใช้ Scientific Linux 6.0 (x86-32 และ x86-64) ก่อนก็ได้
