How to calculate storage size for Zimbra mail server
Planning storage capacity is just as important as other aspects of the system. Without planning the total space required, you may run into insufficient storage. This article discusses how to calculate the total space the system needs, so that expanding storage does not become a hassle later.
Example storage calculation
Suppose there are 200 users in the system, each with a Quota of 500MB.
- Total user Mailbox data: 500 MB x 200 = 100GB
- Database (MySQL) data = 5% of Mailbox data = 5GB
- The zimbra program: approximately 10GB
- Various logs: approximately 20GB
- Zimbra indexes: approximately 25% of Mailbox data = 25GB
Total maximum space used = 160GB ** If you want to back up data on the same machine, leave approximately twice the maximum space used available = 320GB.
