Improving Anti-spam on Zimbra with Whitelist/Blacklist

spam mailEmail sent by users of the system often ends up in the recipient’s SPAM folder even when the recipient is on the same Domain or system. This common problem occurs because the anti-spam system considers the message to resemble SPAM. How to address email going into SPAMBOX You can adjust the initial score assigned to the sender’s email address or domain. Setting it below the normal value reduces the chance of the message being classified as SPAM mail; this is Whitelisting. Setting a high initial score increases the chance of classification as SPAM mail; this is Blacklisting. Procedure

  1. Edit the settings in /opt/zimbra/conf/amavisd.conf.in and find the section “a hash-type lookup table (associative array)”.

  2. Add the email address or domain whose score you want to increase or decrease after this line, using the following format: [vim]‘email or domain’ => score,[/vim] In the example below, the domain ezymailhosting.com has been added with a low initial score to prevent the SPAM Filter from classifying it as SPAM. The email address [email protected] has been added with a high score to increase its likelihood of being classified as SPAM. [vim] { # a hash-type lookup table (associative array) ‘[email protected]’ => -3.0, ‘[email protected]’ => -3.0, ‘[email protected]’ => -3.0, ‘[email protected]’ => -3.0, ‘[email protected]’ => -3.0, ‘[email protected]’ => -3.0, ‘[email protected]’ => -3.0, ‘ezymailhosting.com’ => -5.0, ‘[email protected]’ => 5.0, [/vim]

  3. After editing, reload the amavis config with this command:

su - zimbra -c "zmamavisdctl reload"
