Squid fatal error: Could not determine fully qualified hostname

squid cache proxy If you have just installed a proxy server and see the following error when starting Squid:

[root@ezylinux ~]# service squid start
Starting squid: /etc/init.d/squid: line 162: 28178 Aborted $SQUID $SQUID_OPTS >>/var/log/squid/squid.out 2>&1

Try service squid status or check /var/log/message. If you find this message:

FATAL: Could not determine fully qualified hostname. Please set 'visible_hostname'

The machine cannot resolve its own hostname to an IP address. To fix it, add an entry to /etc/hosts.conf as shown below:

xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx          ezy1.ezylinux.com ezy1

Here, xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the machine’s IP address. Then try starting Squid again.
