How to build RPM package for the Coova-chilli with CentOS 5

coova-chilli Coova chilli is hotspot software that I believe branched from Chilli hotspot, whose development now appears to have stopped. RPM files for RedHat Enterprise or CentOS can be hard to find because few people distribute them. Building an RPM produces errors, which leads some users to switch to Ubuntu, where ready-made packages are available to download. This article explains how to build an RPM for Coova Hotspot. This procedure has been tested only on CentOS 5 (Red Hat Enterprise 5). I have not yet had a chance to try it on CentOS 6, so I cannot guarantee that it works there. Building a coova-chilli RPM for CentOS 5

  1. Download coova-chilli-x.x.x.tar.gz (this article uses coova-chilli version 1.2.7; download other versions from coova.org) with this command.

    [root@ezylinux ~]# wget http://coova-chilli.s3.amazonaws.com/coova-chilli-1.2.7.tar.gz
  2. Extract the downloaded file with this command.

    [root@ezylinux ~]# tar xvzf coova-chilli-1.2.7.tar.gz
  3. Copy coova-chilli-1.2.7.tar.gz to /var/src/redhat/SOURCE with this command.

    [root@ezylinux ~]# cp coova-chilli-1.2.7.tar.gz /var/src/redhat/SOURCE/
  4. Go to coova-chilli-1.2.7/distro/redhat and edit coova-chilli.spec with these commands.

    [root@ezylinux ~]# cd coova-chilli-1.2.7/distro/redhat
    [root@ezylinux ~]# vi coova-chilli.spec
  5. Edit the line containing %{_libdir}/python/CoovaChilliLib.py.

    • For x86, change it to:

      %{_libdir}/python/CoovaChilliLib.py*
    • For x86_64, add %{_libdir}/*.la and edit %{_libdir}/python/CoovaChilliLib.py to match the example below.

      %{_libdir}/*.la
      %{_libdir}/python/CoovaChilliLib.py*
  6. After editing, change the owner and group of coova-chilli.spec with this command.

    [root@ezylinux ~]# chown root:root coova-chilli.spec
  7. Run rpmbuild -ba with this command.

    [root@ezylinux ~]# rpmbuild -ba rpmbuild/SPECS/coova-chilli.spec
  8. Wait for it to finish.

Thank you. I am confused: why do the Thai and English versions differ in step 5? And in step 7 too. Also, I cannot find it in var; I only see it in usr.

Tum.

They differed because I forgot to close an HTML tag. It is fixed now. Thank you for reporting it. If /var/src/redhat/SOURCE/ is missing, try this command: # yum install rpm-build redhat-rpm-config

%{_libdir}/python/CoovaChilliLib.py\* Does this mean adding only \* (an asterisk)?

Tum.

Yes, add only \* if %{_libdir}/python/CoovaChilliLib.py is already there.

Thank you. ^_^ I have removed the extra symbol for you. Thanks. Looking forward to the CentOS 6 version.
