Downgrade iPod touch, iPhone from 3.1.1 to 3.0 firmware

You can now jailbreak iPod touch 3.1.2 (iPod touch 2G).

A few days ago, Apple released firmware 3.1.1 for iPod touch and iPhone. There is not yet a jailbreak program for every version and generation. The original iPhone (1st Generation), original iPod touch (1st Generation), and iPhone 3G can already be jailbroken. (I do not have instructions because I do not have those devices to test.) The other versions should not have to wait long. If you installed firmware 3.1.1 and want to return to firmware 3.0 to use your apps, here is a simple procedure to downgrade iPod touch and iPhone from firmware 3.1.1 to 3.0. Key: Enter Recovery Mode before downgrading. Unfortunately for iPod touch 3G owners, there is no firmware version 3.0. You will have to wait for a jailbreak.

  1. Have firmware 3.0 ready.
  2. Connect the computer and iPod with a USB cable.
  3. Open iTunes.
  4. Enter Recovery Mode by first turning off the device, then following these steps:
    1. Hold the power button for 3 seconds.
    2. While still holding Power, press and hold Home for about 10 seconds.
    3. Release Power but keep holding Home for no more than 30 seconds. You can release it once Windows detects DFU mode.
  5. iTunes reports that the device is in recovery mode. Hold Shift and click restore.
  6. Select firmware version 3.0.
  7. Wait for iTunes to install firmware 3.0 on the iPod touch or iPhone.
  8. Jailbreak the iPod touch or iPhone again. Follow the instructions below or see Jailbreak iPod touch 2nd Gen 3.0 Firmware #7A341.

Jailbreaking on Windows through the GUI is very straightforward.

  1. First update your iPod touch or iPhone to firmware 3.0.
  2. After updating, download redsn0w version 0.7.1 for Windows.
  3. Double-click to open the program, browse to the firmware 3.0 file, wait while it checks the firmware, then click next.
  4. Select install cydia.
  5. Turn the device off and connect it to the computer with a USB cable, as the program instructs.
  6. Follow the program’s instructions to enter DFU mode:
    1. Hold the power button for 3 seconds.
    2. While still holding Power, press and hold Home for about 10 seconds.
    3. Release Power but keep holding Home for no more than 30 seconds. You can release it once the program detects DFU mode.
  7. The program loads jailbreak data and installs Cydia. From this point, simply wait.
  8. When finished, the program displays a finish button.
  9. The iPod touch starts patching and installing Cydia.
  10. Wait for it to finish.

An iPod touch 2nd Gen can be downgraded to 3.0 or 2.1.1. Follow this method. After downgrading to 3.0 or 2.1.1, proceed with the jailbreak.

The iTouch I just bought is probably Gen 2 (I do not know how to check; Model: MC086C). It came with FW 3.1. Can it be downgraded?

nuie

I upgraded straight from 2.1.1 to 3.1.1. What should I do? I can downgrade, right? (iPod touch 2nd gen)

Tum.

Model: MC086C is an iPod touch Gen 3. It cannot be downgraded; you have to wait for a jailbreak.

Nack

I cannot install the firmware. It shows error 1602. What causes this?

nu

So MC086C is Gen 3? How frustrating. More waiting, then. That is that.....

Tum.

If you can enter DFU mode but still get an error, try using another computer to downgrade through iTunes. I think that should work.

Mine is already v.3.1.2. It is an iPod touch. I do not know whether it works the same as v.3.1.1.

Tum.

I think the procedure is the same. :)

MC086C should be 2G, since I can restore it with 2G firmware but not G3 firmware. It is the 8GB model.

Either way, as of today it still cannot be jailbroken.
